12 Angry Men, with Henry Fonda, made in 1957, it's a jury. The films black and white, and the atmosphere in the jury room (where nearly the entire movie is set) is explosive, yet there is no swearing or violence. Deals with many issues in a very enlightened way. Fantastic film.

Grave of the Fireflies. Japanese anime showing the end of WW2 through the eyes of a Japanese teenager, the struggles he and his little sister go through just to get enough to eat (ultimately futile) turn this film into one of the most powerful anti-war films I have ever seen.

It has to be the usual suspects. There are so many plot twists in there. It is the sort of film you have to watch at leat three times before you can truly appreciate it.
