To be honest I didn't realize I had a good sense of humor until I began teaching and lecturing a lot. Then, I discovered that not only did good stories with humor go over well, but they also aided teaching. If you can get people laughing - they listen too!

I think you can learn how to tell a good joke, but natural humor is a little different - IMO it's part of your personality. People who know how to relax and "wing it" seem naturally more adept at humor than the work-a-holic (type A), for example.

I think it would follow the same principle as intelligence (and maybe a sense of humor does require a type or degree of intelligence).

You need to be born with a keen sense of what's funny, how to link ideas and stories together in new and hilarious ways. At the same time, without expanding your horizons, reading, listening to others, learning to look at life in various (sometimes funny) ways, and without a healthy enough environment conducive to and appreciative of humor, you won't have a sense of humor as good as people who did grow up learning and laughing well.

It's always nature and nurture interacting together. We were not born empty, and at the same time, we are not born in a vaccuum.

Coming from a family that has a great sense of humor is very exemplary, and should help a person develop one also. Reading a great deal; helps to expand intelligence, and gives a broader perspective of life's amusements. Having a graphic mind is also a plus, as your mind 'cartoon' kicks into gear when ever you see or hear behavior or situational screw ups.

I honestly believe that it's a product of the environment in which you grow up.

If you grow up without experiencing humor or watching people laugh and share jokes, then you can't understand why people enjoy humor so much.

I pity those folks.

That is an interesting question. While it is not documented to be genetic exactly, perhaps part of it comes with the inheritance of personality, which is 60% heritable. However, I believe most of what is given to you is up to you to develop depending on the environment you live in. It is not "learned" but experienced.

It takes a long time to learn how to be able to think quickly enough to produce an on time comment.
