oh you'll have a jolly old time - first you might try spilling something on the royal carpet - or you could touch some of the pictures and try and peel off a layer of paint
I've always found it amusing going over to the soldiers that can't move and trying to get a "rise" out of them

remember to bring lots of chewing gum to leave for the prince so you can say tho your friends the charles sucked your spit

there just sooo many ways to have fun - go for it don't be such a stick in the mud

The tour is an audio tour (ie you get your own personal walkman type thing with headphones). This means it takes however long you want it to take but I would say generally about an hour-ish. There is the basic commentary on every room and then additional bits that you can listen to if you want to. But even with the basic commentary, you can fast forward or just ignore it if you want to. You don't have to listen to the commentary at all in which case it will take however long it takes you to walk through the rooms.

I went last year and think it is worth it. The state rooms are amazing and you can wonder around the gardens.

Also, each year they have a special exhibition as well (eg last year they had an exhibition on the late Queen Mother's 'white wardrobe' which she wore years ago on a tour of France). I think this year they have an exhibition on the Queen's clothes. Sounds a bit boring but it's quite interesting if you're interest in nice frocks (as the Queen didn't always wear the frumpy clothes she wears now!).

Not sure from your question as to whether you are planning to take young kids but it probably isn't the best thing for them as it is definitely not interactive and they would probably get quite bored with gilt panelled dining rooms, marble hallways etc.

I've heard that they try to rush you along so it may be shorter than one would like. But it costs so much - over £10 each - that you shouldn't go if you really don't want to. Say you'll hang around Green Park or St James's Park, which are nearby, while the others go in. St James's Park has a little restaurant and lots of birds.

Are you going to the London Eye? If not, you could say instead of the palace you'd rather go up the bell tower of Westminster (Catholic) cathedral not far from the palace to see the view all over London for about £3 each. Or go up Constitution Hill (the street beside the palace) and go inside Wellington Arch, which has a nice view over Hyde Park.

if the queen is busy otherwise and because of this circumstance will be unable to welcome you personally - the families almost shurely will be bored.
