I need a word that means sort of the same thing as being torn between two extremes or two things. Here's why...

I have a sentence...

Asher imagines the pain she must have felt being pulled between two extremes.

If there is a way anyone knows of that I can shorten that sentence, while still saying the same thing, please help me!

Asher "imagines" wtf is this a nutcase or is it real pain?
"must have" either she did or she didnt? Does she know her own pain?
What kind of pain comes from being pulled? Is Asher on a rack?
And "two extremes" is two ambiguous.

Start over. One word can not fix this mess.
