The word 'Misfit' actualy originated in WWII during the mass production of military weapons, machine-guns to be specific. The cotter pins were made of aluminum as steel was in short supply. The would often warp under the insense heat of being fired repeatedly. When the soldiers took thier weapons apart to clean them they would discover the pins no longer fit. They were sent back to the U.S. and labeled as 'Misfits'. the term has since grown to mean 'to not fit in socialy'.

It means someone or something doesn't fit in anywhere, like a weed. And technically it's incorrect to use the stereotype group, misfits, cuz they fit in with that particular group, do you get what im saying :p

A "misfit" is someone that doesn't fit in well with others.

I suppose it could mean someone that doesn't fit in with others
in a particular group, but is usually applied to someone who
doesn't really go well anywhere.

It isn't supposed to mean that they are a bad person - perhaps
just awkward or terse or something.

Don't abide by others rules. You do anything rebellious and you could care less about 'making it' in the real world.
