It isn't a slang term. It is a legitimat description of one who does not fit into the world around him.
A leather jacketed rebel would be a misfit in prep school, but fit right well in other quarters.
A high school preppie is equally out of place in a litter strewn back alley.

Well, yes, someone who doesn't fit in. There was also that punk/hardcore band, The Misfits, back in the late 70s, whose motto was "every day is Halloween," spawning the Ministry song of the same name. It was also the name of a romantic comendy with Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe.
