New Zealand has its own oil wells - heck, the stuff is gurgling out of the ground here. But we aren't allowed to use it. Does anybody know why? I darkly remember something about OPEC restrictions... any experts?
Thanks.

Hi

New Zealand's oil production, exportation and reserves have to be looked at in perspective.

Most currently available figures indicate that from 90 million barrels of proven reserves, New Zealand produces 32,000 barrels per day and export 30,000 barrels per day. Compare this to the current world consumption of 76 million barrels per day.

This means that if tomorrow we dug up and exported every last drop of our proven reserves, we could keep the world going for approximately 29 hours!!!

Hopefully that is a better explanation than a world-wide (or even OPEC) conspiracy to stop New Zealand using its 'vast' oil reserves!! :-)
