I am doing an independent study project and I need some ideas on what to do it on. This will be a year long process, which will then be presented in front of a panel of judges. I'm open to any field of study (ie. math, science, history, etc...). If you could possibly give me some ideas on what you would be interested in, I would greatly appreciate it. If possible, please elaborate on details. Thanks.

Well its difficult to find something really unique because anything truly unique won't have resources available to base your research on. However, how about:
1. How Synesthesia is reflected in the life of the normal person. I.e. the creation of gender based languages (female ship, male sword) etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synaesthesia
2. The development and mystique behind mathematical mysteries such as the Poincare Conjecture and Fermat's Last Theorem. Why do they intrigue people and how do they affect the world when they are solved? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/proof/wiles.html

3. Who really "discovered" the Americas? Europeans, Japanese, Chinese, Romans, Egyptians? Did these people really visit the Americas long before Columbus and what evidence if any did they leave behind. How would the history of the world have changed had these peoples pressed their influence in the Americas? http://paranormal.about.com/b/a/237011.htm
