let x be the first number:
x + (x+1) = 31
-1 = -1
x + x = 30
2X = 30
divide both sides by 2
x = 30/2 or x = 15
thus, 15 and 16

Think about how to solve a problem like this. Divide the number, in this case 31, by two and you will get 15.5 That's halfway between 15 and 16. Test that answer by adding 15 and 16 and prove that your answer is correct.

so we need to find X, it helps that we alreay know the answer.
31 = x + (x+1)
31= 2x+1
30 = 2x
x = 15
x +1 = 16
