Many conservatives believe that the Bible is inerrant, is inspired by God, is the word of God, and is to be interpreted literally

. A believer has an obligation to follow its dictates to the letter.
Many liberals believe that the Bible was written by individuals in ancient times who were promoting their own evolving spiritual beliefs, but who were limited by their tribal culture and by their lack of scientific knowledge. Many liberals believe that it is important to go beyond their writings, and reject what they have to say on topics such as origins of species and of the universe, human slavery, the suppression of women, treatment of persons with a homosexual or bisexual orientation, religious intolerance, torturing prisoners, the death penalty, treatment of religious minorities, spanking children, executing non-virgin brides, etc

I think what most liberals are saying is that it should be an individual choice for us to believe or not believe and how to interpret writings. Liberals don't believe in governments or other individuals telling us what is right and wrong, and how to run our lives. Liberals believe that individuals should be responsible for their own censorship and not someone else censoring them. Liberals believe in the Bill of Rights, which was framed by the same God-fearing forefathers that framed the Constitution...the same Constitution that the Conservatives like to throw in the face of the Liberals while at the same time ignoring the Bill of Rights. One could argue that the Bill of Rights is in direct conflict with the Bible, or one could argue that it upholds the teaching of the Bible. Liberals are not religious intolerent, nor are the anti-God or anti-religion. There are just as many spiritual Liberals as there are Conservative and there are *gasp* non-religious Conservatives. Liberals just believe strongly in the seperation of church and state, whcih is what our country and the Constitution was founded on. Not all Liberals are against spanking of children, jsut against other people doing it because Liberals believe in taking responsibility for their own acts and holding children accountable themselves.
You say that Liberals go beyond the writings of the Bible, would would you not agree that individual churches, attended by both Conservatives and Liberals, take it upon themsleves to go beyond the writings of the Bible and interpret the Bible in their own ways? That is why we have different religions, and different choices. What is right for one is not always right for his neighbor. Unfortunately, most Conservatives think their is only one way, their way.....

I would say I'm more liberal because I don't believe in

words, but actions, and the best Christians I

have known were people of spiritual action who did

not get up in people's grills all the time over Chee-sauce.

They lived as examples, with their actions reinforcing their faith.

They were keen on being mellow and helping ANYONE who needed help(not just their own) and didn't look at conversion as

some kind of soul quota competition. Believers nowadays are TOO organized$All it takes is one look
at cable TV. This country needs to change it's policies regarding not taxing the churches in my opinion.

Think of our trade deficit and how helpful that would be
in whittling it down!

I'm not sure that the Bible needs be taken literally. No doubt it reflects the customs and mores in practice at the time it was written. I am sure, however, that one cannot claim to believe in the bible and, at the same time, twist and/or ignore scripture to accommodate a lifestyle he finds tempting and attractive. Contemporary social philosophies don't enter into it.

Conservative. Because liberalism is based on emotions, they can't see past the examples given to see the truth.
