There are some beautiful areas in Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana within 2-3 hours of Chicago. Are you traveling alone, with children, or looking for a romantic getaway? That makes a big difference where you might want to go. Also, remember that 80/294 is totally screwed up heading out toward Indiana-it's a nightmare!

Try Kohler, Wis.[2hrs] American Club, if golfer two of the world's best courses located there. Call ahead for tee time. Go north to Green Bay/Door County[1hr from Kohler] rooms available for a weekend as long as Packers not playing.[If an Easterner, particularly NYC, will have to sign paper stating will tell all easterners Door county lousy place to visit!!!.]
Want just a hour/ first stop--Lake Geneva area, then to Milwaukee[1 1/2 hrs],young children? Go to the Zoo, the children library on the Lakefront, museum on Wells, Miller Brewery open for tour weekdays,
County Stadium[Brewer} open year around w/ restaurants { same in Green Bay for Lambeau Field]keep you busy for a day and can return to Chicago via I94 that same day

I'll assume mean one-way and not at rush hour...try driving up to Oshkosh (about 175 miles, or 3 hours) for a visit. Here are a few things to do there: EAA Airventure Museum, the Grand Opera House, a couple museums, a zoo, and arboreum. And, there's a wealth of lakes, beaches and trails.

Note: I drove back from Minneapolis last Sunday. The backups on the toll booths on I-90 where horrendous. It took us 3 hours to get from the state line to O'Hare.
If you want to stay under 3 hours for your return trip, I would avoid I-90.

If kids are coming.. check out the children's museum..one of the best in the country! and the zoo.
If no kids, take a walk on our canal, go to the quaint village of Broad Ripple for some shopping and dining.
There are great hotels downtown and great restaurants... try....
Scholar's Inn or Agio in the Arts district.
