If you do this yourself, you're probably looking at $500 in parts, possibly less if you buy a reconditioned compressor. One thing that you can't easily do yourself is replace the refrigerant that you will loose when you disconnect the old compressor, so that will be $150 to $200 to charge the system. Figure $1,000-1,200 at an independent garage or $1,500+ at a dealer.

You are probably looking at around $$850.00 for the whole ball of wax. Yes, AC compressors are like transmissions, expensive and you need'em. Good luck with the repair.
