Virus protection protects you from downloading a virus program. A firewall will block someone from trying to take command of your computer. I check the log on my firewall and someone is trying to gain entry about every 10 seconds..mostly from China, a few from Malyasia and Europe, a couple inside the country.

Antivirus finds virus infected files.
Firewalls block ports on your computer and keep programs from accessing the internet without your knowledge.
You need antivirus, BUT Windows firewall is good enough for the typical home machine.

Antivirus is exactly that - helps to clean viruses from your system etc.
Firewalls block access to your computer from other systems etc.
Both are recommended, although neither is 100% necessary.
