That's actually a more complicated question than you might think.

The longest english word to appear in a dictionary is 'Pneumonoultramicroscopicsili covolcanoconiosis' which has a wwhopping 45 letters. however there are two problems with this word. 1) it was originally created as a hoax and 2) its a medical word and they're often exlcuded as they are 'not used in general english usage'.

So if you're going to discount 'Pneumonoultramicro scopicsilicovolcanoconiosis' the next longest word is 'Floccinaucinihilipil ification' at 29 letters. This word means - the act or habit of estimating or describing something as worthless.

PS - Leave the spaces out of the words. I had to put a space as yahoo won't allow you to type words that long, lol. Presumably its to stop people typing lines and lines of gibberish...

Not sure if this is still the case.
