It depends what type of fish you have. Some fishes such as livebearers are easy to distinguish primarily through the gonopodium or appendage the male has for the transmission of sperm. Others have different characteristics such as different body shapes, coloration and finnage. Some species are more difficult and require "venting" or a peek at the ventral openings to determine the sex.

In most cases such as in birds, the males are aways the bright colored ones. Such as the Siamese fighting fish. The only ones with the bright colored fins are the males and they use the colors to attract the females.

you cant tell on all fish, but for guppies, the females have a round fin on there underside, and the males, more like poker fins, to "stimulate" the females into reproducing Good luck, also the males are much prettier, than the plain looking females, not true for all fish tho

Depends on the fish. Could be coloring, fin shape, size, or any number of other cues. Best to find a book on the subject and see what it says about YOUR fishies.

well if its in a river near major cities, just claim its a female, you will be near 80% accurate everytime, since all the chemicals flowing in the rivers these days are morphing into female's due to all the estrogen flowing in them (may explain the huge rise in transexuals and other such in the human race)

depends of the speicis of fish, some are easy to tell apart some are imposible.
