how soon after you first shot of depo provera is sex safe without using a backup method?

WELL THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU TO WAIT 7 DAYS. BUT LET ME SAY THIS, I HAVE BEEN ON THE SHOT FOR 8 YEARS NOW, IM 25. ITS NICE ONLY HAVING A PERIOD ONCE EVERY 3 MONTHS. BUT EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT, MY SIS HAD A PERIOD FOR 5 MONTHS STRAIGHT & GOT OFF IT. I ONLY WEIGH 112 LBS, SO I WISH IT WOULD HAVE MADE ME GAIN SOME WEIGHT, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT DIDNT. HOWEVER, LAST YEAR MY DR. TOLD ME THAT B/C I HAVE BEEN ON IT FOR SO LONG THAT I SHOULD GET A BONE DENSITY SCAN. MY INSURANCE COMPANY AT THE TIME DIDNT COVER IT, SO I DIDNT GET ONE. MY CARRIER I CURRENTLY HAVE DOES, SO 2 DAYS AGO I WENT & GOT IT DONE. THANK GOD I DID B/C IT SHOWED THAT I HAVE OSTEOPENIA IN MY HIPS & SPINE, ALMOST OSTEOPOROSIS. IF YA DONT KNOW, THATS SOMETHING OLD PEOPLE IN LIKE THEIR 60'S-70'S GET, WHICH IS A LOSS OF BONE MASS OR THINNING OF THE BONE. THAT PUTS YOU AT A HIGH RISK FOR FRACTURES. SO I HAVE TO DISCONTINUE THE SHOT ASAP & START TAKING CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS. LUCKILY B/C I AM SO YOUNG ITS REVERSIBLE...I HOPE ANYWAYS, WITH MY LUCK I JUST DONT KNOW. BUT THE DR ALSO SAID IF I WAS TO CONTINUE ON THE PATH IM ON I WOULD BE CRIPPLED WITHIN 10 YEARS. I ALSO NOTICED THAT WHEN I STARTED THE SHOT, THATS WHEN MY MIGRAINES STARTED. SO MY SUGGESTION TO YOU, B/C I CARE, IS TO FIND ANOTHER FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL!

I agree with the second girl up there. I did depo when I was in the navy, and I gained about 30 lbs. It's nice not having a period, but the weight gain wasn't worth it. There's a birth control pill called Yasmin that is actually supposed to help you retain less water, so you don't bloat as bad during your period, and you don't gain weight. Some women have actually reported losing weight while on it.

I dont know but I suggest you use a different method than Depo. I was on that when I was 15 and I gained 40 lbs in about 6 months, and then I got off of it and it was hard to lose the weight. I suggest try pills, like Alesse or Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo.

I never gained an ounce on depo. I did gain weight when I went off though. I loved it. They told me to use a backup method for the first week! Hope this helps!

i was told to wait 2 weeks. so just be careful. oh by the way i have been on the shot for 4 years and have not gained an abnormal amount of weight... the normal 5lbs fluctuation each month is all the problems i have encountered with the shot!!

depo provera takes effect immediatiely.
