I wouldn't give my 16 year old daughter her social security card because of her irresponsibility and reasons for wanting it. But, she was able to obtain it herself at the Social Security office, and she had it mailed to one of her friend's houses, all without my knowledge and approval. She consequently lost her card. Now she is in a detention camp (for something else she did). So I am sure your mother is just trying to protect your interest, because your social security # is linked to your credit file, and that is something that you should be very protective over.

The only thing you would realistically need your ss# for is to get a job. If you are a minor and your mother doesn't want you to work, then I think you just need to wait. Believe me, you'll have plenty of time to work in your lifetime! Also, even if you got the ss# and got a job, how would you explain your absences to your mother when you were at work?!

Go to the local social security office and get a copy of it.

Ask your mom for the number. If she says no then maybe she knows that you don't need it. The only thing you need your number for is to get a job.....and you can't get a job unless you're 16 in most places. It never hurts to ask.

It depends on why you need it. If you need it for a job, I'm sure she will. Your SS# is on your school records and on your parents' tax records. She doesn't need to give you the card, just the number (but don't bug her if you don't need it. . . it's not worth the hassle).
