You can use a Marineland Penguin Mini with Bio-Wheel. It's recommended for 5 - 15 Gallon tanks. It's a hang on the tank power filter and it's available at virtually all outlets that carry aquarium filtration products.

Here's a review from Epinions:

I'm not aware of many hanging tank filters with a dry/wet wheel that are intended for a 5 gallon tank. The are some good in hood ones, but they come with the tank. 5 gallon tanks are hard to filter well, and generally you'll need do weekly water changes. I'd get a sponge, box or corner filter. Make sure it has a separate sponge filter, and carbon filter. Otherwise your biological filter restarts from zero when you change the carbon filter.

It depends on the fish you plan to keep. Its a small tank and you don't want turbulence to cause stress for your fish. Being a small tank you are probably planning on keeping small fish that may be sucked up by an external mechanical filter so I recommend you use a sponge filter driven by a moderate flowing airpump and replace 20% of the water with aged water three times a week.

Get a whisper filter, but get one for a 10 gallon tank.

Any undergravel filter should work for a 5 gal tank.

I would use a Hagen AquaClear filter. I also have a tank with a Whisper and that seems to work well too.
