Beta is like a term to tell you that something has just started and it's still undergoing changes to the mail. An example would be Google Mail Beta, it's a new email that's constanly being updated and changed. Once it's out of beta then all bugs have been fixed, and ready for full consumer use.

perhaps you mean google beta mail?

Google calls it a beta (test version), although it blows away the competition.

The new and improved version of Yahoo! Mail, I think that's what you are talking about.
