Why are the people in San Diego so "conservative" and why do they toss around the word "liberal" like it is a bad word. The people I know who consider themselfs liberal are very caring about other people's well being, animals and the environment.

I mildly disagree. San Diego's roots are conservative. And generations pass that on to the next.

These roots are influenced by the military profile of the area. Military people tend to be more in touch with common sense issues like raising families ; protecting our nation's freedoms ; a sense of right and wrong regarding the illegal situation ; maintaining law and order, etc.

However, San Diego has changed a lot in the past 20 years. The transplants who have moved here are not just homeowners, which someone alleges. They have come here to enjoy the warm weather, and they live everywhere. They have brought with them their own political ideas from where they were raised.

Conservatives do care about the poor, wildlife and the environment. I tend to think of myself as more of a moderate, but I am deeply involved in charity work, helping the poor, raising awareness on global issues, and taking my family on long hikes in nature whenever possible.

As for the individuals who toss words around. Sadly, it comes from everyone. It's the human condition. Until we get to know the person on the other side -- we don't truly understand them.

The people of San Diego are conservative because they have sense. Liberal is a bad word. Liberals like to carry on about being concerned but when push comes to shove they want everyone else to do the heavy lifting. For example consider that both Al Gore and Sen Obama gave speeches denouncing everyone else for their 'lack of concern for the enviroment' then hopped into small fleets of SUVs to drive away. That kind of two-faced snideness is why thinking people use 'liberal' as a curse word.

Good question.
I like San Diego.
Would not mind living there.
Not sure why the city is predominantly conservative, but overall, the city is hip, clean and modern.
And compared to Oklahoma conservatives, San Diego is a liberal city!

San Diego as an entire, is a conservative, protection rigidity city. With that being stated, we've super variety in this city and particularly a brilliant gay community. Carlsbad is a superb city..Its wealthy and white...i does not evaluate Carlsbad to be a "hip" city to stay in.
