My built-in webcam microphone works on my main computer, but it won't work on my laptop during web conversations on instant mssenger.

They should as long as the sound card is not missing. Which I experienced once. But, on most, I would say yes they do. Make sure you look into the volume control settings and confirm that your microphone is not on mute!

switch off the cam microphone from the sound card settings in control panel and use a microphone its much better

No problem with my Apple G4 laptop and iSight camera.
