This is a bit complicated, but I'll try to make it simple.
Angel was originally known as Angelus before Darla turned him into a vampire. Later, some Gypsies returned his soul and he took the name Angel.
Here's where I'm confused. My understanding of vampire myth and lore is that a vampire comes about via the replacement of a soul with a demon, or by the corruption of a soul into a demon. So then does the fact that this returned soul takes the name Angel and the demon keeps the name Angelus show defiance by both parties, and that it is a demon stealing the name Angelus inside of the host body of the rival entities, or does it show that Angelus' soul has been corrupted and that, in fact, Angel is not Angelus' human soul returned, but another soul, or one created? Or is Angelus just coincidentally the name of the demon?

I heard somethng about Liam, but didn't know the story behind it. I thought it might be a real name with Angel as the nickname.

From what I understand he was bestowed a new soul under certain conditions. Because, first of all, if you look at the flashbacks of Liam (Angel before becoming a Vampire) he is callous, listless,violent and somewhat of a drunkard bully. He hardly resembles Angel the soul-filled vampire with remorse for his actions. It had been suggested in Buffy the Vampire slayer, that Liam was not a good person and probably would have become a murderer reguardless of becoming a vampire.
Whereas, Angel has great remorse for his actions. He spent years dwelling over all of his evil doings and being stagnant. It wasn't till he met Willie was he able to channel his distraught into becoming the Champion Angel.
It was Darla who gave him the name Angelus. He chose Angel only after he took on the champion persona.

Okay, as the whole Liam/Angelus/Angel thing has been hashed out, I will just point out that in a number of episodes, they referred to the fact that there is a demon inside a vampire, but he/she has access to all the memories of the human body. If you have a soul as well (like Angel and Spike) you have both inside you and the soul has to suppress the demon -- but the demon doesn't go away.

Angel did not get the name angel or angelus until he he became a vampire also it is impossible for a vampire to have a soul because he is a dead creature. Remember movies can really sway away from the truth of vampire folklore far away. Another false thing to remember is that the cross has no effect on a vampire it was the catholics church that started that rumor. so I recommend several trips to your local library and a lot of reading in-order to know how to keep a vampire at bay....................

Angel's real name was Liam. There's an episode where his father calls him that (before he slaughters them all).
When he turned, he picked the name Angelus. Or maybe Darla gave it to him, I can't recall.
Angel named himself Angel after he got his soul back to remind him of the things that Angelus had done all those years.
Not sure whose soul it was, though. Probably his original one.

No, he was turned into Angelus by Darla, and when he was given back his soul, he took the name Angel, and couldn't remember being Angelus

Nope. His human name was Liam. Then Darla sired him and he took the (demon?) name Angelus. Then when the Gypsies gave him back his soul the demon side was squelched and he took the name Angel.
I always liked when he vamped out!

No where in actual vampire lore dose it say that a demon takes over the body and pushes out the soul.

The TV show is different from the Mythology.
The part of a Human that is removed when they become a Vampire is the aspect that contains compassion, love ,and conscience(the part that not only KNOWS right from wrong, it is the portion that feels remorse, regret, ect...) the portion that remains contains all the Dark evil impulses (that are part of the nature of all Humans) and encourages them.
They are the "same being" but they use different "names" because each "personality" Hates the other.

New vampires are made by being bitten once or more times by another vampire. So it would seem that vampirism may be caused by the transfer of a type of virus. I have also heard of people turning in vampires by drinking the blood of one .still a transfer of blood.
a person that wants to be rid of vampirism could have the block to their soul restored and either become a half-human/halfvampire or be completely restored or destroyed.

Spike is from "Buffy the Vampire slayer" sequence and Angel became genuinely responsible for turning him right into a vampire.
