Can't really say why NASA did this now, but I question How the films were lost or misplaced. I also wonder why we haven't seen pictures of the multi-million dollar "car" which was left on the surface in plain view, yet we've never seen it since. Supposedly, we have cameras with technology that could be used with telescopes to take pictures of it. They may be blurred but the object would/could be visible. Interesting!

Hey Soul,
I am mostly shocked, not at the fact that they lost the first video that was ever shot of a moon walk....
I was more shocked at the fact that they are missing 700 BOXES of video's from many Apollo space flights.
How does one walk off with 700 boxes of videos and not be noticed...
"Oh, Hi Joe! These, I am taking them home to..... uh..... for.... Oh yeah, we're doing movie night on Thursday and I thought I'd show the kids a few clips....
Yeah, That's it! Movie Night!
Losers!

We were never on the moon...it was all a hoax. And now the tapes have "disappeared" - most obvious point, 1960's technology would not be able to get man 250,000 miles away land safely, take off (without disturbing the moon's surface might I add) and get back to earth (another 250,000 miles) in a tiny little capsule.

They were going to make higher resolution video of the moon landing so they needed the original film.I assume they meant to digitally remaster it.
Check here for a better explanation.http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/apollo/apollo_tapes.html

I think if the original is found, more skeletons from the cupboard would be out.
