Bank of America gave me a Campus Checking account. It is free and they give you some free checks when you open it. And they have a forgiveness policy on your first overdraft.

I did not like Citi Bank. They ended their contract with my school and then charged me 10.00 to close my account. Bastards.

SunTrust is very difficult for me. They make me go into their branches for everything. I can hardly get any business done online or over the phone.

Credit Unions have good accounts too, but most aren't free without direct deposit.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Avoid opening an account on the first day of classes, it can be murder!

A bank account?

I guess a checking account, if you can be responsible enough to handle checks. You can't bounce checks, and the bank charges you ~$30 everytime your account is overdrawn. If you can't handle it, go with the safe savings account

Checking: Some branches have specific student checking accounts. Check out the features on these though, because I remember seeing one, and realizing it isn't even as good as a regular checking account. Also, you should be able to find a bank that offers free checking. Most checking accounts come with a fre ATM card, and it doubles as a debit card -- this can be really handy, but you have to be really responsible with them.

Go to local banks and pickup some brochures... they want your business, and will give you all the information you need. Just remember, they're trying to sell you something, so be smart.

Get a bargain checking account or the equivalent with no minimum balance in and no service fees in checking. At my bank they call it connections checking. Draw up a realistic budget and stay with it. Get a passbook savings account at least. Advance into Stock ownership if you can save enough diligently.
Don't let yourself get buried in credit card debt during your student years. Have fun, but be smart. Good Luck.

Ask for a student account - most banks offer them. Otherwise just a normal IPCA.

A student account located in your college town. One with an overdraft protection, and low interest. Oh and no minimum.

No credit cards, just debit.
