It's solely for our pleasure. Doesn't really serve a purpose, per se, because deaf people don't naturally "hear" music, yet they lead full, rich lives. Even if we didn't create our own music, the birds would still sing, horses' hooves would beat rhythmically, creeks would gurgle and crickets would still chirp. Personally, I think of these things as Nature's Music.

I spent six months researching this question with seven other people from around the world.
We wrote a 100 page answer to it and to sum up, it could be described as a social tool to bring people together on an emotional and spiritual level. It's not just there to be listened to and admired.
As to what music actually is: we just couldn't answer that - and believe me we tried!

Music is the art to the ears.
It saves humanity over and over. It is one of the only things so pure and necessary that without it civilization and expression would wilt like a garden in the desert.

Music tells stories. Music allows us to express our creative talents in a way that can be pleasing to many. Music can create, sustain and influence a mood. And music lets me get funky with myself.

It is a primitive method of demonstrating patterns easily "digested" by the brain.
No real purpose. A waste to dedicate one's life to.

No purpose, it just is.
Unless the maker gives it purpose.
