Ben-wa balls: they are for the most part 2 or 3 plastic balls that have a small weighted ball in side them. They ususally have a string between them with a longer string on one of them to allow the user to remove them from a Vagina or Anal area.
They are inserted and the feeling of them gently bumping each other (due to the tightness of the area and the weighted ball inside) causes a constant stimulation.

Just to clarify 2 things:
1) I don't understand why this is a stupid question. I have a GF that enjoys them and we wondered if other did too.
2)I have read of men (mostly) using Ben-was anally too. Women tend to use them vaginally. They do in fact have a string between them. The Anal beads someone here mentioned are something different. They are not weighted.

You have confused 2 different things together. Ben Wa balls are not joined together at all and are normally inserted vaginally, the constant movement and weight of the balls does 2 things. It provides some stimulation and it also helps women focus on working the pubis muscle that can strengthen climax. The beads that are on a string are commonly known as Anal beads and are inserted doing sex and pulled out to increase sensation during climax
