If it's the whole box that you're changing and not just the M/B, you will prob have to install XP from scratch. If it's only the M/B & Processor & memory, sometimes you can get away with just letting XP figure things out and installing the drivers for your M/B when it asks for them. It's usually not a stable environment, but it's good enough to work with to re-organize your data, burn it onto a CD/DVD and then you can format your H/D and start from scratch.

According to Microsoft, you should reinstall your OS first, But before doing that, I would make sure that your motherboard is XP certified. The main reason for reinstalling the OS is that to Microsoft this is a brand new computer. All of the activation is done for each motherboard, so you can change out all of your peripherals that you want, just not the board. So, you will need to get a new activation code. Once that is done, then you can apply your board specific drivers.

When you install a new mother board you have to go into bios and set the time-date-the harddrive needs to be recognized and the boot order must be set up. Once you do this-exit(saving the changes) and then load Windows xp from, new install, on the disk.

Install the motherboard first, then when you turn on the system (fingers crossed) XP will say "You got New Hardware!"
Install the drivers. Then it'll say, "Yo dude! you changed your hardware too much recently! ownzor!"

Then you'll need to reactivate. Free phonecall to india does the trick (quite good for india call centre actually).

Since it's from a Compaq, it probably won't work right anyway since it has proprietary programs and such. You can try though...I would install it in the new case then run a Repair Install for Windows.

Windows 1st. Then Drivers. Make sure you have the CD's for the drivers and update windows online ASAP.

the chicken or the egg? in this case it would be a duck. you see before putting drivers onto a disc you need a disc. before you can put drivers onto a harddrive you need an operating system(windows). before I go fishing I need bait.

well drivers are softwares that tell XP what exactly your harware does.[in simple words]
That has to be installed in XP.
The only thing tht stays outside XP[your operating system ] is the BIOS.[and boot record..neednt worry about it!]
