Lots of great folk rock bands out there - Steel Eyespan, Fairport Convention and so on. They are usually very good people to contact about mandolins and so forth as they usually have some songs which were written for mandolins in their repatoir.
A New Day records may be a company worth contacting.

Scotland probably the place to go. Twee bands, or folk rock like sons and daughters are the kinda bands that have mandolins. Saying that, Primal Scream had a mandolin in country girl. Either that or a ceilidh band.

I like playing me mandolin, probs because of sons and daughters.

Mov to Arcata, CA. You'll find more hippies and banjo playin' folks than you can shake a stick at, like the Compost Mountain Boys.
