Start supper
Talk on the phone

Is the 12 year old a boy or girl?
If it is a girl: is she interested in crafts? If you have a JoAnn's or Michaels around, there are some nice craft kits (not too expensive) that may keep her occupied. If she likes to knit or crochet, she can start on some Christmas projects.
Does she like to read? Take her to the library and ask the Young Adult Librarian to suggest some titles.
If it's a boy: maybe some books on sports. What does he like to do? Skateboarding? Football? Basketball? Does he have any hobbies? Would he be interested in stamp collecting? Coins? Football/baseball cards?
Take him to the library, too. The Young Adult Librarian has books for boys, too.
If all else fails, they can go to the movies, listen to cds, watch videos, etc.
