Can anyone explain to me who "the less fortunate" people are.

And I'm sure you are not going to say the ones not born rich are less fortunate, because 90% of the U.S. is not born rich.

I wan't to know who is less fortunate enough in this country to have the opportunity to succeed.

Hey, first of all I absolutely love your answers....I appreciate a stong mind and quick wit!

I am a Republican but also have my Masters degree in Social Work (I really won my Dad over with that one....hehehe) and have been working in the social welfare system for 11 years. The whole idea of "the less forunate" is a disgrace! 90% of US citizens are not rich and by definition, you are "less fortunate" if your combinded household income in less than 24k (in CT at least).

And that is so distturbing to me! The social welfare system is the Dem's baby, or so they say, but it is a total disgrace and a modern version of slavery! I say teach a man to fish and he can feed his family forever, the Dem's feel just give them a fish for the night thus securing ourselves their vote during the next election. I have seen first hand woman who sit at home and have babies just to increase the amount of money they receive in their welfare checks....last time I checked she was prego with baby number 16! And all but her first 3 were born with full blown AIDS! And BTW it is OUR tax dollars that will pay for these poor beautiful children to die a horrible and painful death! But our governnment will not even allow me to talk to her about birth control. So, you tell me.....does slavery still exist?

I could do on and on and on, thank you for the question....maybe, just maybe, somebody else will read this and also attempt to affect change the way I am trying! Peace out!

Frankly, I think that the Dems use that phrase to allow mediocrity in people. They think that social programs like welfare are more important than national security. While I am aware that there are some poor people in this country, all in all, we are ALL rich. Where else can a poor person feed himself with the dollar menu at a fast food restaurant, where ramen noodles are 10 for $1??

To me, the less fortunate are people who are not Americans. We have so much more freedom here than anywhere else - there is SO much we take for granted. There is no American in my opinion that is "less fortunate." And before you all go nuts and say I am a rich Republican, know that I only have $3 in my account right now.

Nicolas, let me just say welcome back. Although we have different views, you are at least able to express them in a mature manner. I think I actually missed you.

As far as your question, my fiancee who is a conservative (gasp) and I were discussing the minimum wage. He completely feels that those who make minimum wage should continue to make minimum wage until they are motivated enough to get an education and make a decent salary. However, there are the small towns in America where the minimum wage job as a stocker at Walmart is the good job in town. I know this because I have lived there. These people to me are the "less fortunate". For whatever reason, they choose to live in dead-end towns with dead-end jobs. Maybe their families live there, maybe they enjoy living in a quiet small town. Whatever reason it is, nepotism in small town is the norm. So unless you have the "hook-up" you're working at Walmart or Taco Bell or Burger King. Is it lack of motivation? Maybe. But to me, these are the "less fortunate" as they do not know that a better life is out there, they are resigned to work a minimum wage job, just as their parents did.

it relatively is a scare tactic that worked for them before in the previous many situations. The previous Bush even tried it on bill till ultimately he reminded George Sr how his own kin member stood as much as Mc Carthy. people who call each and every Democrat socialist only for desiring well-being care or the different social application think of something below jungle capitalism is socialism. they are unquestionably those merchandising social Darwinism, survival of the fittest those are a similar form as people who yelled socialism whilst newborn labor became into abolished

OOO this is a toughie. The less fortunate would be the people who are currently less fortunate than many US citizens IE homeless people. Stop picking fights where there's none to pick.

First Democrats are not socialist but do believe in social programs that help our fellow Americans when they have made bad choices or have taken risks or that may not have the ability to perform like the majority of Americans because we are all in this together and not every man for himself.

There are people with disabilities who are unable to work or support themselves adaquately. There is also a blossoming amount of people who are either lazy, inept, incompetent, unreliable, or unemployable, (I know, because I have hired & fired), the problem is these types of people have a tendency to reproduce and expand a gene pool that used to be kept in check by the evolutionary process of survival of the fittest.

Capitalism forms those that have, and those that don't. Socialism creates a middle class, and in America, more people belong to the middle class, then the other 2 classes. That is also the class that gets taxed the most. So, I guess we need (and have) it all, right?

First off Democrats are not Socialists, and vica versa. Secondly, you are one of the less fortunate, you were born with less capacity for intellegence.

Handing out sops is a method of de facto 'vote buying'...if I promise you 50 bucks, will you vote for me? LOL

Of course the GOP's good with the sops, too, they just hand theirs out to corporations instead.
