We've only been to Vegas once and stayed at TI. We loved it. We're thinking of going back this fall and noticed that the Golden Nugget has good package deals.
Is it a nice place? We didn't make it to downtown Vegas the last trip so we don't know much about it. We're not big gamblers, but like to sightsee and shows, etc.
We are accustomed to the upper levels of mid range hotels so we don't want to stay in a dump!!
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I have stayed at the TI, MGM, New York, New York, and Imperial Palace. The Imperial Palace was not that bad it was in a good location, the elevator was SLOW!!!!
The MGM was great, but my favorite was New York, New York!!!!!! I really likes it! And you have to eat at the Strat. Sphere. I was the best steak that i have ever had!!!! For 2 of us to eat it cost 160.00 but it was well worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope that i was a help, let me know where you go

Downtown is not great for sightseeing. (actually very poor). The only major attraction in the laser light show. Downtown is more of a gambling only area. Its worth the trip there for an evening, the food is good and take in the light show one evening. Other than that it doesn't compare to the strip. (The nugget is likely the best place to stay downtown ) It's about a 20 dollar cab ride to get downtown so stay on the strip and visit downtown. The best bang for your buck is the Tropicana on the strip central located, a short walk to the tram at the MGM and from there ....anywhere you want. Has one of the best pools in Vegas, and very affordable. Check out the site below for reviews of just about any thing or place in town.

I am planning a honeymoon and my requirement was that it had to be downtown. I love the nostalgia. The Golden Nugget is a great casino, and you can walk out and walk from Casino to Casino easily. The Fremont Street Experience keeps the Casino's well lit outside and I felt totally safe walking down the street enjoying the sites. I love downtown, but I am one who enjoys the old town feel and the good prices. Downtown seems more laid back and there is no traffic under the Fremont St Experience, so you don't have to worry about getting hit by a car like the strip area.

TI has nothing on the Luxor and the Golden Nugget. Downtown is alot of fun and soooo much cheaper than the strip but also not too far away from it. You have to hit the Palms and Mgm studio 54

I wouldn't stay downtown. But its fun to spend an evening there. I am going to Vegas next spring and intend to stay at Hooters new casino! A nice moderate hotel is "The Stratosphere"
The Golden Nugget has a great Casino though. Very Classy Joint.

Downtown is ghetto... Stick to the strip; that is of course unless you like getting pickpocketed or being solicited the second you leave Fremont Street! Everything is cheaper downtown but the money you'll be saving by staying there will be spent on cab rides or a rental car.... Better to stay on the strip and take the monorail. Have fun!!!

If you want to stay downtown, then stay at the Plaza. It is the best hotel that is downtown. I use to live in Vegas. The Golden Nugget is ok but like I said the Plaza is the best

Econmically downtown Vegas is depressed compared to the strip, so you will find better deals on rooms, and on food. Remember hearind about 99 cent shrimp cocktails, and $1.99 breakfast? You will be very hard pressed to find them on the strip anymore, but they are available all over downtown.
As far as hotels go, the nugget is the nicest hotel downtown.
Up until a few years ago, it was owned by the Mirage group.

As to the comments on crime downtown, I hate to say it but it happens all over this city.

Its an older place...but by no means a dump. You get better rates downtown and actually the food and prices are better too. Wherever you decide to stay...take a trip downtown just to see the lightshow they do everynight. It really is interesting. The way they do the lights to the music is just amazing. Its like watching a mini movie. Have fun and good luck

The hotels downtown are not as fancy and nice. I would say they're average. I usually stay downtown because it is cheaper. Then I take a cab to the strip. If you do stay downtown, make sure you catch the Freemont Street Experience. It's neat!! And free. Have fun there!!
