It sounds to me like it's not booting to the CD and trying to boot to the hard drive, but there is nothing on the drive. Try setting the boot order in BIOS.

When I install a OS for someone, I fdisk the harddrive, wipe it clean, then I use the Boot Disk to Format the harddrive, and in this case, I would format it to NTFS, for Win2000. Then I pull the boot disk and restart the PC with the OS CD in the drive, set the Bios to boot from CD, and it should start installing the OS, I also make sure the CD is free from alot of scratches, and the Drive is cleaned ( the laser eye ). IT should work if the above steps are reproduced, I even use Boot Disk made to CD, and or Floppies.. It's good to have a alternative source for Boot Disk, the ONLY BOOT DISK That I use is DOS 6.22. It fdisk and formats as best as any available........Good Luck

Try booting with a windows 2000 bootdisk, you can get one at www.bootdisk.com for free.

Make sure the bios is set to boot off the floppy drive first. f1, f11, or del will get you into the bios.

I always format and paritition the hard drive after I have backed everything up, then I boot off a floppy disk and start the install. It may take longer and it may erase data but its the cleanest way to install an os.

Make sure your bios will boot from CD. When you start the system you can hit either F1 or F2 or DEL, depends on the system, then you will enter setup. In there you should find the boot order and make sure your CD comes before your harddrive

Sounds like you are trying to load an upgrade with an incompatible OS already loaded.
