Music is the only thing in the world that can make you laugh when you want to cry, and make you cry when you want to laugh. There is NO magic in the world as powerfull as the magic of music. :)

I really hate to say these. But this is what I learned from Biology-Psychology. Anything that are pleasurable that we feel, it is because our brain that releases high level of dopamine (a neurotransmitter). Just as when we take pleasureable drugs that causes our brain to realease this same neurotransmitter. now in the case of listening to beautiful music that causes us to calm down, probably causes similar effects in our brain. And pleasurable effects also causes calming effect in our muscles and mind. Good enough. yes?

The brain releases endorphins, opiate-like pleasure chemicals, when agreeable music is heard. The metabolism and breathing begin to slow as a consequence.

Certain frequencies have been shown to calm the brain. The frequencies that do so are ones that are close to being perfect (flat gauss curve). Our receptors don't have to work as hard to translate 'perfect sound' to our brain.

It relaxes us. If music and songs are things that we like listening to, then we will undoubtably enjoy hearing them. Music is just like that.
