Go to your local newspaper and ask if they have end rolls. After running the presses they always have these huge rolls of newsprint leftover ends. Most papers will GIVE these to you for free! So call around. Then just keep a roll on hand. Or if you get the daily paper, you are all set. But with the end rolls, no messy print!
Also, hit some yard sales for old towels or shirts if you prefer that for bedding. Then just run loads of hamster-only wash!

tissue is good
or..my sister had a hamster and she bought a big pack of facecloths and every month she would give the hamster one to shred up and use as bedding
newspaper and cotton balls are all great ideas as well

My hamster just died a hour or something ago,i used pine bedding wich you can get at any pet store in the small pets area.Hope this helped.Heres a link.
Its cheap and it works great!!!

if you have a paper shredder, you can use shredded paper
