In many different ways !!!
- Educate / inform (Newsround / Blue Peter)
- Entertain / amuse (Children's Dramas)
- Give fond memories (years later)
- Become part of 'Fads' (Dick & Dom - going round yelling 'Bogies')
- Scare (EG Dr Who, Deamon Headmaster)
- Encourage them to buy things (the adverts in between)
- Give a first step to adult programmes (EG first watch Newsround, then later the normal news)
- Escapism (EG Cartoons)
- Encourage different types of behaviour (deliberate or by accident - EG Kids going round doing Kung-foo after watching EG Power Rangers)
- Companionship (no friends around watch TV, also keeping out of the parents way)
- Distraction? Taking them away from doing homework / going and playing outside.

We didn't have a t.v. til my son was 3. Before that we played, read, drew pictures and listened to music and the radio.
After that we watched Sesame Street and anything else that was fun or interesting, like wildlife programs and comedies.
I explained the difference between the adverts and the entertainment. He already knew what 'the news' was from listening to the radio. He was able from the beginning to tell which was which even if he was guessing.
He later got into Playstation including violent games but already knew that dead people don't get up again. He is not violent in real life, has a good school record, was a free reader by age 12. He is an average student, grades C's & B's, articulate and a great sense of humour.
He has been upset by news items, mainly deaths and disasters; thats always made him go quiet and thoughtful; some zombie stuff has given him nightmares.
Thats about it really. Personally I think that parenting is the job of parents, and its more than putting their tea in front of them.

Children have a problem telling the difference between fanatsy and real life. Even when it is the childs imagination they get confused between did it happen or did I make it up.
They want to act out what they see. Lets face it the stuff on TV is not for kids. 'Even the stuff that is for kids makes them sedentary and lethargic. They sit around all day and do nothing but watch TV. One good thing that might be said of this is that the vocabulary develops sooner. But is it the words you want them to say???

Unfortunatley, I think some parents dont realise that they have the duty to control what their children are watching and do let them watch wheatever they want.
I think it is underestimated the effect what watching the wrong TV & movies can do to certain children and its an issue that should be looked at more seriously.

t.v. shows can affect some children (stress Some)... it depends on that kid. if your child is one that is easily manipulated by t.v. shows than it's up to the parent to tell the kid or to discipline them... shows such as the power rangers can cause a kid to become violent... I was sitting in my friends house one day and two 3 year olds were standing there watching power rangers. it goes to commercial and one kid just turns and hits the other in the head (lucky didnt poke eye out) but ya, you just have to get to know what kind of child you have and take whatever action necessary...
