He plays the deepest of any defensive position, about 12-15 yards off the line of scrimmage. He will line up in the center of the field, but leaning toward the side with no tight end.
He must be a good tackler because he is the last line of defense. If the ball-carrier gets past him, he scores.
Good luck.

FreeSafety is a position in the secondary ( cornerbacks, free safety, and strong safety) that lines up on the opposite side of the strong safety and is usually the faster of the two. He is free to roam around to wherever he thinks the ball is going to be. The help out in pass coverage and are the last line of defense on deep pass plays.

A free safety is a position on defense. You should be happy because although he is on a small and young team, he may be very athletic and very fast. A free safety is free to run around the field. Wherever he thinks the ball is going to go, that is where he goes. The free safety position is best position on defense. Usually, he is the last person who will be able to tackle someone if they are about to score a touchdown, because he's the last person on defense, in the very back.

He has the responsibilty of pass before run. When the defence is playing a cover 1, which means each man to man, he usually floats around and sometimes gives help to anyone with a mismatch. In a cover 2 and 3 (zone defence, each defensive player is responsible for a section of the field), he plays deep.

Shares the deep middle of the defensive backfield with the strong safety. The safeties are the last line of defense on pass and run coverage. They give support to the cornerbacks on inside of the field on pass coverage.

the deepest defender, who is usually given the most freedom in terms of moving around on the field. if he sees a problem or potential mismatch, it is his job to rectify the problem. Free safeties must not allow themselves to get caught by play-action or fakes in the backfield, because they are the last line of defense. they need to be good tacklers, and to be able to cover receivers going deep.

Free safety is the deep defender who lines up on the side of the defense where there is no tight end on offense. The strong safety lines up on the same side as the tight end.
