I get an error msg. that says cannot play the file or might not support trhe codec that was used to compress the file, I am able to watch the dvd though

DVD-R is the oldest standard so every DVD drive should be able to recognize it. DVD+R was the next standard after DVD-R. Older DVD drives usually do not support newer DVD standards like DVD-RW and DVD+RW. Long story short, I don't think the problem is with the DVD media you are using.

if you have a dvd /cd/dvd(r)dvd(rw) drive you can use
dvd(r)disk to burn the movie you say your having trouble what is the error msg is there one?

on the face of your dvd thats in your computer it will have a +or a - on it im me if you need more help/where it has compact disk you cant miss it

this all depends on the model of your dvd burner... some models only burn - or some only burn +... the newer burners will burn both...

need to see what kind of DVDs your burn device support,
DVD-R-RW (only -)
DVD+R+RW
DVD+-R+-RW (you can burn both)
