well - superman is the man of steel, so he is impervious to bullets, etc. As for his outfit (and why it, too, is impervious) i recall that his uniform is made from the cloth that his kryptonian parents wrapped him in.

neither he is 'the man of steel.' His body is like steel, not a vest or suit. Think about those times when he catches bullets with his hands, no vest or suit there.
