I can answer this question since I feel scared of them.
I used to live in a ghetto neighborhood where it was all blacks and mexicans. I got out of the ghetto through hard work and education. When I used to live in the ghetto, I was an EASY target simply because I am asian and I was the easy race to pick on. During the course of my time in that area, I was
1. Spit on by blacks
2. Assaulted by blacks
3. Robbed by blacks
4. Had a gun pointed to my head by blacks
5. Had my car hit by blacks
6. Followed by blacks calling me racist names
7. Asked for money by blacks on daily basis
8. Glared angrily and stared at by blacks as if they wanted to kill me
9. Had black people yell at me and get in my face for no reason
10. Had my stuff stolen by blacks
So years and years of this verbal , mental, physical abuse by blacks and mexicans I decided it was time to move out and be better than they were. They picked on for no reason. I did nothing wrong to them but they did everything wrong to me.
When I go into a professional building, college, store, movie theater or whatever, if I see a group of 3 or more blacks or mexicans I will avoid them because of my negative experiences with them. Yes even though those people in the elevator are not the ones, I cannot help but think of the bad things that happened to me simply because they are the same race and look familiar. The same thing goes for mexicans or hispanics. I had a bad experience where I walked outside in a shopping center and a group of 7 hispanics surrounded me and started pinching my ****. I was wearing slacks and a long sleeve shirt. I will avoid being near a group of mexican males, the same way I will avoid being near a group of black males.
No I am not ignorant. Ignorance is only from not knowing. I KNOW because I have lived in that environment and dealt with them. In fact I am very perceptive, observant and I know when people are racist because I have had MUCH racism done to me by blacks and hispanics.

I can't help wondering where you live, and suspect it's a fairly "white bread" area. Where I live there's quite a mix of races. I also wonder if it ALWAYS happens, or you just notice when it does.
(White chick that I am, and claustrophobic, it all depends on how big the elevator, and how many people that + (in "3+") represents. If it's 10, I let the elevator go, I don't care WHAT races or ethnicities it contains. If it's roomy, I get on. Don't care, but then being a minority race in this or that setting is something I'm used to.)
I once heard or read of a study that found that white people tend to get uncomfortable when the proportion of other races gets higher than 1/5 (or some similar fraction), but that was a long time ago.
I also hear people describing cases of women showing fear at males when walking at night -- where the conclusion is that it's race, but I often suspect it's gender.
If your results continue to hold with more (and complete) observations, and taking everyone's gender into account, that does sound pretty sad, doesn't it?

Really? If it's happened where I've worked, I wouldn't have paid attention to such foolishness. It takes so long for elevators to come that people would cram into them. Being claustrophobic, if I couldn't be near the door's opening, I needed to wait for the next one. I wonder how many people may have thought I was being racist for not joining the ride. I hope none.

I am white, and I have gotten on elevators with multiple people of different ethnicity many times. I do not get on an elevator with someone who is obviously sick, sneezing, coughing, etc... But the color of your skin does not prevent me from being around you, nor does it make me fearful of you.
So the fact is, by asking this general of a question about an entire race, you are being obtuse and racist.

Because some white people - like some black people - have led very sheltered lives and are racist, culturalist pigs.
The particular incident you spoke of sounds as though that particular white person is an idiot.
Our blood is the same color and anyone who thinks - or teaches thier children - differently is a sadly boring and ignorant person.

Its a sad fact, but there are still ignorant people in this country. I had a co-worker that was that way towards Mexicans. I just went out of my way to put him on my projects. I would wave and say "Hi" to him at company picnics, restaurants, etc. I knew it would not change his views, but it was fun to do it anyway. In the end he left the company and things got better at the office. Don't let it get to you, life is too short to worry about people that think that way. Ignore them, Embrace everyone else.

I'm from a large where that type of racism does not exist. Therefore I didn't believe it existed anywhere. Then I went to school in the pan handle of Florida ('97) and the class had whites in front, blacks in the back. That was very odd to me. I sat where I would feel most comfortable. Which was in the back and the black people gave me unwelcoming looks. I tried to engage in conversation with them hoping to make friends and I was ignored. I was very sad and uncomfortable. The whole city was like that. I'm back in the large city where differences are embraced.
I'm with you. racism sucks.

I see this a lot, but I don't do it myself. If there's room enough in the elevator for my skinny self, I'm going in. I don't care if it's full of people with masks and guns. I hate waiting for elevators.

I cannot believe I am reading this and I am so shocked to hear that things like this are still happening. It really saddens me so much. The colour of a persons skin is unimportant but what comes from within is very important.
