When people decide they need help with their drinking, or others decide for them (courts, employers, families, etc.), they go to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings where they will learn many excuses to continue drinking. "It's a disease, it's genetic, I'm powerless, blah, blah, blah."
It's a thinly disguised religious program that many feel is a cult. It's little more than faith healing plus some religious mumbo-jumbo.
According to studies, including AA's own internal studies, it works for 5% of the people who go there. By coincidence, the success rate for people who try stopping on their own is 5%.
Guess if you're ready to stop, you stop, and when you do, you give credit to whatever you were doing at the time.
I tried getting sober through AA many times over a twenty year period without success. Since I turned my back on them, I've been able maintain sobriety for 5 years.

An AA meeting is a place where people interested in quitting drinking can come and find others who have done so using AA's 12 step program.
It's helpful to find someone with long term sobriety to show you around for a while.
Cheers!
