My child wants to play the flute for his first year of band. The teacher said we could buy one or rent one. What is the average cost? Do you recommend new or used. The rental would be $30 a month for used/$38 for new......if I rent to own the contract is for 24 months which would be $720 used/$912 New. That seems like an awful lot..Although you are only required to rent for at least 2 months. Any recommendations on how I should go? Should I just rent since I am not sure if he will choose this instrument again?

My daughter just started flute too. I got her one from Costco.com and it was $140.00 which included shipping and handling. It took only a few days to receive and it seems to be good enough for her purposes. We also bought my son's saxophone from Costco and we paid way less for it than anyone else in the band. Just to warn you, flute seems to be a challenging instrument to learn....

Look on E-Bay and check prices. Here in SoCal you can buy used rental returns for under 200. Did the Jr High band thing also, from flute to clarinet to trumpet to nothing. Good Luck!! ?:)x

Go to craigslist.com. Click on your state and city, then look for instruments. Type Flutes in the search............I bet you can pick one up for REALLY cheap!

mine was about $600 for a decent flute. that's about the average.

It depends on what kind you buy. Call up your local music store and talk to someone there.
