I often do not agree with the ACLU.
However I have problems with several things you stated.
"They don't just support and strive to protect civil rights," - How is that a bad thing?
"which one would you rather have, freedom of speech or freedom itself" - there is no "freedom itself" without freedom of speech.
"Our government does everything it can to protect the interests of its people, thus it is a government "for the people, by the people" - illegal & unconstitutional wiretaps!!!
No the federal government is not out to violate every natural human right in my opinion but the current administration has done it's best to subvert the constitution in many areas. I wish a TRUE, constitutional & fiscal conservative would come in & clean up Bush's dirty laundry.
My thoughts on the ACLU - not many as they are not really much of a political power these days.

This country was founded that all men are created equal and I am sorry but the ACLU is very necsessary with all the religious nutjobs and Piss-Poor presidents we have been having the ACLU is actually what we, as americans, need to keep with the values that America was built in. I am sorry if I am offending you but maybe you need to look more at the Declaration of Indepence, the Constituion, and some of the best speeches ever made, Like "I have a dream" by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and The Gettysburg Address. And if there is corruption in the ACLU, then you have to just fix it, not completely disband the entire thing. Why don't you care about your fellow people, young one.

"those who would sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither" - Ben Franklin
doing everything you can to protect the people is a bad thing when you start violating the rights you are trying to protect, that is when the ends no longer justify the means. i personally would rather live in a slightly more dangerous world without having to worry about some paper-pusher deciding whether or not what i say is dangerous or not. the ACLU does not claim that the government violates every natural right, just some. as for the wire tapping, it is obviously unconstitutional when you can listen in to private conversations without a warrant, that is the definition of a search, intruding into someone's private affairs

I think they do good in some of their endeavors, unfortunately, they seem to think everything is some sort of rights violation and will go so far as to stick their nose into situations where there isn't even a debate of the guilt of a suspect, but the manner in which they were caught, which I find somewhat irrelevant in serious violent crimes.
Basically, when the ACLU became an organized political group with the intent of influencing the political atmosphere, they also lost their integrity and good judgement.

The ACLU is one of the few things standing in the way of Bush burning the Constitution and spying on Americans. It is necessary and I love it for protecting my civil rights and the civil rights of all Americans. I can sleep soundly at night knowing that it will take legal action whenever somebody in power tries to take away my rights. They may not succeed, but they'll sure as hell fight. And that's what we need -- someone to fight for freedom: not in Iraq, not in Afghanistan, but at home, where our freedoms are being eroded.

I think the ACLU does a lot of good. Sometimes they might cause "problems" but they try to protect people's rights as human beings. Our government might be protecting the interests of our people, but at what cost.

The ACLU helps protects our Civil Rights, even if sometimes they go to the extremes. Conservatives hate it because it stands in their way to take away our rights and our privacy. Even in times of war we are entitled to Civil Rights and privacy.

They are retarted a retarted organization, that is for sure. They are supported by many people, such as Progressive Insurance and Ford Motor Company.
People using these organizations support the ACLU, and I don't understand why they don't cancel their policy.

Why is it that every ignorant conservative like you seems to group EVERY other person who isnt stupid into the vague category of liberal? Grow up! They are trying to protect the rights of others, and if the person whose rights were violated didnt feel like having the ACLU defend them, that person could choose to keep them out of their case!

The sole purpose of the ACLU is to protect your civil rights. Yes they can be extreme and can take things too literally but I shudder to think what rights we would no longer have without their activism.
