Yep....OpenOffice is doing everything as good as MS-Office, it's free and you can save everything as a pdf !!!

Adobe does have a trial version of Professional PDF which i'm using now. It lets you convert to PDF and use what you convert. You can't make changes to your item after you turn it into a PDF, though. Click the link below and go to mid page. You're looking for Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional Try.

I used the office suite from Open Office org. to send a resume with my picture (jpeg) via email as a pdf attachment. I openned Writer and imported the photo, wrote my resume, saved, etc. Very easy. And Open Office is free and compatable with MS Office. You can download it from openoffice.org
OOo is available in MS Windoz and Linux.

Exactly. You're stuck, though Adobe Elements may allow you to create a PDF. It's a lot cheaper, but I can't remember if that is included.

Use this:
http://www.pdf995.com/

You can download it for free, after installation, what you do is print the document or pic as if you were going to print it in your printer, but after the print to dialog comes up you chose pdf995 as your printer and give it a file name click ok and you get your doc or pic in pdf format, very nice and it is free.
Good luck.

Download the free version of CutePDF from http://cutepdf.com It won't let you edit the document but since you are wanting to convert an existing document it will do it.
