My daughter 5 has been taking swimming lessons. I am an OK swimmer but do not know the proper techniques. Could someone give me some tips to tell her about how to use her legs while kicking. She has a tendacy to let her legs sink even when kicking some. especially when she raises her head. Thanks in advance

Ok, first... is she kicking from her knees or her hips?
The kick should come from the hips & stay under water. (If the feet come out of the water, she's kicking air & not helping.)
Second... If she's raising her head to breathe, the legs will sink. To breathe in freestyle, she should turn her head to the side & keep kicking. Since she's only 5, I would not expect her to be able to get these things right away, especially the breathing. Usually, the first instinct is to pick up the head to breathe, but that makes you sink.

Good Luck!

Kick with the whole leg: when I started out, I would only kick by bending my knees. It should be both the knees and the femur moving up and down.

if its free style, she shouldnt be raising her head. Your head should turn to the side so your chin is over your shoulder and not perpendicular to the pool floor. Also, keep most of your leg movement underwater: if you're making big splashes, that means you're kicking the air and not the water.

Although she is 5, she'll learn eventually as her muscles become more controllable. The more comfortable she is in the water, the longer she can put her head under water and learn proper techniques. If shes still coming up every few seconds to grasp for air, then shes struggling just to stay afloat rather than swimming.

I would suggest getting her a kickboard or some other small floating device to learn proper kicking. Have her hold the device in her hands - then kick around the pool... if she's not getting anywhere, then she's not kicking the right way. As someone said earlier, she needs to use her entire leg to kick with - not just bend at the knee. If you don't have a floating device to use, have her hold onto the side of the pool and see how high up she can get her legs while kicking and making "white water" behind her.

It is never too soon for a child to learn to swim. I'm not a strong swimmer, but I've taken three swimming classes and I'm enrolled in another one right now. The coach told me that the only way you can develop a strong kick is to practice, practice, practice. I agree with the person that suggested to get a kick board to help your daughter out, but I would also recommend swim fins, or flippers for her feet. They have helped me to kick better than I was because they give you self confidence.

She's only 5, she'll get stronger and kick better as she grows a bit and practices. You might get her some swim fins to try, and with those she will get the feel of kicking with her whole leg rather than her feet. She will do fine!

She may need to keep her lower back straighter or curved up a bit, maybe her knees are bent too much. To look at her technique out of water, have her lay on a short bench with leg hanging out and kick. You may have to jump in, hold her at het stomach area and hve her kick while you check those areas.

My suggestion is to start up swimming shorter distances and progression your way as a lot because the two hundred. First, i'd do a 50 freestyle then a one hundred, then a 100 and fifty, and ultimately the two hundred. once your mushy with the shorter distances, you'd be able to artwork your way as a lot as be mushy with the two hundred as welll. also, you may want to do a 2 hundred pull (making use of merely your hands and by no skill your ft), and a 2 hundred kick(merely making use of your ft, no longer hands). this may help you construct power on your legs and hands which could also help you with the stroke as an complete. good luck, and make constructive you artwork your way up! =)
