That depends on the guy...some are compulsive liars who live in their own little world. Others are doing it to protect themselves. Others have hidden agenda. And finally there are those who have a political position.
The worse part is that a majority of them aren't very good at doing it.

You know, in many ways we are our own worst enemies. I have tried to check myself when I catch myself with the inclination to lie, because I have told some whoppers in my life. I do not know where the need to embellish or cover up that which does not need embellishment or cover; however, I do know the urge is there. I think maybe it goes back to two things: 1) as little boys we want to please everyone, so rather than disappoint our mother or father or teacher or whomever, we just lied to make sure we looked good. It often worked then, so I suppose the habit became ingrained, and 2) during the formative years of mankind, men were competing for the best or most whatever (fill in the blank) woman, whether the most fertile or whatever the critera was in "those days" and the competition was too much for many, so they faked and lied and tried to use deception to make themselves seem better than they were or thought they were in their own minds. So, all those years of deception just became as ingrained as the little boy trying to please mom and dad or whomever. Anyway, I have found that trait in myself since I was a kid. I am not sure, but it may be pathological. For instance, I do not believe that I have told many whoppers, but it is mostly telling people that I was not ever in Viet Nam, when in fact I was, because I don't want to be thought of in a negative sense, even though I just did my duty the best I could. I know the image of many of the RVN vet, so I ususally deny my participation. It does not really hurt anyone, and I admit to being in the service, just not in the RVN. I am sorry you have that problem, because I do not believe there is any cure, and I know you cannot be sure of what to believe. But believe this (if you can and if you dare)--all men do it for a variety of reasons and to a variety of levels, but all men do it). Sorry!

men lie when they don't have to because it is a sport to them, and the bigger the lie, the more it makes up for something that isn't quite so big.
