★★ SECURITY SOFTWARE & TIPS ★★

◙ The very best virus scanners are free. Mcafee & Norton Antivirus are mostly hype and won't do as good as the free ones. -- About.com & Smart Computing Magazine

◙ Download and install AVG. Use it first and see if it finds any viruses or trojans.

◙ After running AVG go here and run this virus scanner online. There is no need to install it on your computer.

◙ Microsoft's New Live Safety Center. Download this scanner to check and remove spyware, viruses, get rid of obsolete files and junk off your computer, and improve your PCs performance.

◙ The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks computers running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom—and helps remove any infection found. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. You can run this tool online FREE.

◙ Before downloading any software from the internet type it into http://groups.google.com/ to see if that title is known for spyware or viruses. Google Groups has over 1 billion posts spanning 25 years to help you. Even after checking it there ALWAYS scan it before opening it. You just can't be too careful. -- Smart Computing Magazine

◙ A lot of the download sites like http://www.download.com/ and http://www.tucows.com/ scan software before releasing it to the public. But just for safety sake you should still scan it yourself.

◙ If you have a broadband modem or network router the firewall in these is not as effective as a software firewall. The firewall that comes with Windows XP isn't very good either. Download ZoneAlarm and your system will be a lot safer. -- Smart Computing Magazine

In a recent test:

Free:
Avast, Antivir (doesn't check you outlook files). They are almost as efficient as the non-free...avoid AVG, it's the worst

Non-free:
Best: Kaspersky, PC-cillin, BitDefender or F-Secure
For beginner: Norton Antivirus, McAfee or Panda Titanium
Light, efficient but not for beginers : NOD32

Kaspersky seems to be the best, but they are all almost equal...some are faster, lighter, easier, dectect more or less viruses....just, choose if you want to pay or not.
Avast seems a very good choice.

Good luck

Nortan Anti-virus is often called the best, but even though i beileve it to be the best at finding and fixing viruses I also think its over priced and bulky. By bulky i am refering to it uses ALOT of system resources, so you have to have a nicer computer in order to run the new versions of the software. A good cheaper program to turn to, and the one i use, is Panda Anti-virus. Along with being cheaper it also is a smaller program (takes less RAM and processer power and Hard drive space). I hope this helps you in your search, Good Luck, feel free to ask me for me help if you need it.
