no. limewire itself is NOT illegal...
however, uploading/downloading copyrighted material is illegal... regardless of the tools used.

just like owning a gun is not illegal, but the act of shooting someone with it is illegal. (please note: in my analogy i'm excluding self-defense)

LimeWire is NOT illegal. It is just another peer-to-peer piece of software that allows you share files on your computer and also look for files on other people's computers. What IS illegal is sharing copyrighted material.

Think of it this way - are cars illegal? No. But if you were to drive faster than the speed limit, then you are giving a policeman a reason to give you a ticket and possibly take you to jail, depending on how fast you were going.

Likewise, if you use Limewire to distribute or download copyrighted material, you may be subject to fines and any other punishment that a judge finds appropriate.

If Limewire really was illegal, you would definitely not find their company information on their website (www.limewire.com). If you decide to use the software PLEASE read their guidelines on how to safely use P2P software.

Limewire is not illegal! This program protects with terms of use and restrictive laws, so the program has no responsibility if you use it for illegal purposes.
You are an outlaw if you use it for illegal purposes, such as: spreading a form of virus, download, share or push an item protected by copyright laws, or other restrictions by the law.

ok, let me ask you this....it is a very simple question that will tell you if what you download is illegal. 1. Do you pay for it?

Just from looking at Limewire's homepage I would probably say yes, yes, what it is used for is very illegal, atleast as far as the RIAA is concerned. just because your friends and parents use it, doesn't mean it isn't illegal. Like the guy said before, P2P sharing is perfectly fine and is completely legal, the problem is that limewire allows its users to transfer mp3s and other copyrighted information between users, this is what makes it illegal.

Anyone who says Limewire is illegal doesn't know what they are talking about. Peer to Peer networking is quite legal in that it allows you to share content among peers.

What is illegal is the sharing of copy protected material, such as MP3's, Movies, images from magazines, anything that has a copyright associated with it. Since Limewire is used mainly for sharing illegal content, this is why people say it's illegal.

Just search the net for DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) to see for yourself.

As it is P2P application, it is not illegal if you are exchanging legal stuff like your own music creations, home videos etc. However, many people use it to downloading copyrighted music which is illegal.

Limewire messed up two of my computers so it's off limits to my family. It's free, so when you open your computer up to recieve files for FREE, you are getting some unsuspecting surprises being dowloaded to your system. Be careful, I'll be buying my songs instead of trying to go the free route from now on. (Nothing is free, to replace my two computers was 1800 bucks!)
