To visit, San Francisco is certainly a world-class city. It has pretty much everything a tourist would want or need for urban fun. Great shopping, efficient transit, unique museums/parks, and a lively atmosphere.

To live, it does depend on your personality and values. From a purely materialist perspective, the standard of living in San Francisco is pretty horrible. The homelessness, dirtiness, noise, and crime means SF will never, ever beat places like Minneapolis and Denver in those "Best Place to Live" statistical indexes But people who love San Francisco don't love it because of the crime rate or because everyone goes to church every week...there are other, less quantifiable reasons for that. It's famed tolerance, the creative juices of the tech-economy, and that very California penchant for the quirky and naughty...for example. Love it or hate it, the place isn't boring.

Oh, and in the future, if you're going to launch into an unfair attack, at least get your facts straight:

The first confirmed cases of AIDS in the United States was in LOS ANGELES, with probable cases first reported in "normal" NEW YORK and ST.LOUIS.

totally disagree - it is a horrible city and i have hated it every time I have gone there. I think the best cities in the world to visit are ones that can declare more than "first city in the us to have aids" How about Hong Kong, or Milan, or Athens to visit and someplace normal like new york to live

i loved san francisco but tell you the truth...i never saw so many homeless people in my life, anywhere, including the 3rd world, as in san francisco. that kind of changed my perspective on the place.
