simple way to learn them is. divide the functional group. for ex. if u r studying alcohols, make a flow chart. take a double page in middle write alcohols. then on left write preperation n on right page write reactions. write them n daily just have a look at them . Do this for every functional group u have. This seriously helps. It helped me a lot during my 12th boards. n if u make it during your exam day u dnt have to open your course book n look for the reactions.. its a lot easier this way. All d best for organic!

After a few years of memorizing all the organic chemistry without actually understanding it, I took ionic organic chemistry which was a graduate level course. It basically allowed you to look at any set of chemicals and figure out what was likely to react. It was actually easier than memorizing all the reaction. I don't know if that is helpful besides saying there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You can tell from the relative proclivity (searching for a word) of a particular groups to give up electrons. It does have to do with the electronegativies but it is more about how free the electron pairs are able to move from atom to atom. You need to have groups or atoms that can take electrons when there are electrons to give. You have to think about it from the point of view of certain groups attracting electrons that might make it easier for another group to form a bond there. It was quite a while ago when I took the course. I only knew it as ionic organic chemistry. It would be worth looking into because you seem to have anticipated it.

Sorry to disappoint you...but there is no easy way to memorize these reactions easily. If there were such a way, I would write a book and sell it to thousands of desperate organic chemistry students each year...
Practice, practice, practice. Keep on top of your material. And most of all, understand mechanisms. At its root, organic chemistry is simply electron dances. Electronegative species going towards electropositive species.

Hi,star, hhhmmmmm,,I don,t know what is confusion, but me think to understand organic chemical reaction is not too much dificult, inogranic as more complecated as I think,In organic reaction when u understand one reaction ,then the same reaction u will see in next hydrocarbon reaction, for example,
When to prepare ethan(C2H6),readuction of ehten(C2H4)or ethyne (C2H2) should be done,,,,same reaction as given for chemical property for ethene ,so if u understand 1st it then no problem,
One thing other u should to use mechanism method for organic reaction, then u will know organic compound react,,
o.k good luck,

Fold a pieces of paper in half and on one side you write the name of the reaction and on the other side you write the reagents.
On a flashcard, write the starting materials and the products and on the backside write reagents and the mechanism.

The only way I know is to practice practice practice!! Do your homework assignments over and over again!
