Well, I've told stories about coming out to Sinead O'Connor (who I would still totally do) and my first time happening to a Nirvana soundtrack. I liked REM, too. But really, what I loved beyond love was hip-hop: De La Soul, Leaders of the New School, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah...
There was some homophobia in hip-hop then, but mostly it was about having fun and saying real things about life. I'm happy there's "homo-hop", like Hanifah Walidah and Deadlee, now.
